88. Broadway Activity Park

Home > 101 Reasons To Love The Cotswolds > 88. Broadway Activity Park

Some Cotswold highlights are famous, some are quietly fascinating, and Broadway Activity Park is one of the reasons we keep finding new things to love about the area.

You will find the background, local detail and small points of interest that make Broadway Activity Park worth knowing about, especially if you enjoy the stories behind the Cotswolds.

The Cotswold village of Broadway may be famous for its beautiful High Street and its top class hotels, restaurants and shops, but it now also has a state-of-the-art children’s playground that is regarded by locals as the best in the area – and it doesn’t cost a penny to use.
Broadway Activity Park opened in 2009 following a £300,000 revamp of the village’s three-acre recreation ground, situated down a path half-way up the High Street.
The activity park boasts three zones equipped for toddlers, juniors and teenagers. There is lots of great play equipment including a see-saw, climbing poles, twin fly spinners, climbing towers and a skate ride simulation.
There’s an all-weather surface for football, basketball and netball and there’s also plenty of seating, a shelter for teenagers, picnic area and an oak shelter for parents.
The different zones are connected by Cotswold stone pathways with raised mounds, natural rocks, trees and shrubs.
Broadway Parish Council was the driving force behind the new activity park which replaced the village’s derelict skate park and outdated children’s play area.
At the time of its opening, parish council clerk Kevin Beasley described the development as a facility for the community of Broadway to be proud of, which could be used by all and would provide an added attraction to visitors from neighbouring villages and other tourists and their families.
One regular user of the park is Trinny Savage, who lives a few miles from Broadway, but loves to visit the activity park with her family.
Trinny said: “Broadway playground is amazing. We go every other week with our cousin who is three. I am 11, my brother is 14 and my gramp is 75 and we all have such a fun time. It’s definitely the best park in our area. There’s loads to do and even when it’s very busy we still find something to play on.”
One visitor from Brisbane, Australia, has described it as “a brilliant surprise in the middle of such a lovely little town”.
When Loving the Cotswolds’ editor David Wood visited the activity park with his family in September 2014, it was buzzing with children enjoying the huge range of activities.
Apart from the very well maintained equipment, we noticed that the grass was really nicely cut and even the toilets were spotless.
The activity has obviously become a hugely popular attraction for local families and visitors alike and although it is free, it undoubtedly brings in more visitors to this lovely Cotswold village.
It could be described as an unexpected jewel in Broadway’s crown, a village often known as “the jewel of the Cotswolds”.
