40. Hidcote Manor Garden & Kiftsgate Court Gardens, near Chipping Campden


Two distinct gardens just a few hundred yards from each other attract thousands of garden lovers to the north Cotswolds each year.

Hidcote Manor Garden, located in the tiny village of Hidcote Bartrim, near Chipping Campden, is one of England’s great Arts and Crafts gardens.

Created by the American horticulturist Major Lawrence Johnston in 1907, Hidcote is famous for its rare trees and shrubs, outstanding herbaceous borders and unusual plants from all over the world.

In 1947 Johnston entrusted Hidcote to the National Trust and the garden welcomed its first paying visitors in 1949.

The gardens at Hidcote are divided by tall hedges and walls to create a series of outdoor rooms, each with its own special character.

From the formal splendour of the White Garden and Bathing Pool to the informality and beauty of the Old Garden, it's full of surprises.

Offering a profusion of colour contrasts with impeccably manicured lawns, the garden continues to influence garden design today.

There is a restaurant in Hidcote Manor and across the road the National Trust also have a garden centre and café.

Just a few hundred yards from Hidcote you will find Kiftsgate Court Gardens, another popular Cotswold garden which is open to the public during the summer and is the creation of three generations of women gardeners.

The garden was created by Heather Muir in the 1920s and her work was continued by her daughter Diany Binny from 1950, whose daughter Anne Chambers now looks after it with her husband.

The gardens at Kiftsgate Court are a delight for all the senses. The upper gardens around the house are planted to give harmonious colour schemes, while the sheltered lower gardens recreate the atmosphere of warmer countries.

The newest addition is a contemporary water garden providing tranquillity and order in contrast to the exuberance of the flower gardens.
