260 oak trees planted in Gloucestershire to mark Queen’s Jubilee
04/02/2022
Children from Swell C of E Primary School donned their wellies to plant two English oak trees to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, as she’s set to pass 70 years of service this weekend.
The two oaks are part of a wider initiative which has seen 130 villages across the county successfully bid for a pair of commemorative oaks, generously gifted by The Honourable Company of Gloucestershire.

Swell Parish Council applied for the trees back in 2021 and were keen to include the local primary school in their planting on this special week.
Jane de St. Croix, Swell Parish Council chairman, said: “The trees will be there for future generations to enjoy, as a reminder of Britain’s longest reigning monarch, so it was important to include the youngest members of our community who will watch the oaks grow over the years.”
The idea behind the jubilee oak trees was the brainchild of Sir Henry Elwes who said: “As a former servant of The Queen as Lord-Lieutenant, this is a great way to mark her spectacular reign with an English Oak tree with a life of 200 or more years in every Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire parish and small town.”
Fellow Honourable Company court member Mark Hurrell added: “We’re very keen to mark Her Majesty’s Jubilee this year and the idea of planting a couple of trees in each parish is a good one. It will draw attention to the actual event but will also be there for future generations as a reminder of Her Majesty’s service.”
The two oaks in Swell have been planted in two locations in the heart of the beautiful Cotswold village, with the kind permission of local landowners, the Abbotswood Estate and the Barings family.
Schoolchildren from Swell have used the opportunity to learn more about Her Majesty’s service this week, producing their own portraits of Queen Elizabeth II.
